Tomorrow is election day in Tobago. We effed up and didn’t plan on the massive parades of supporters of both parties clogging the only way home from the beach, so driving ~20km=4hours.

Very shortly after this was taken, a PNM car swerved around us (standstill traffic for 20 minutes or so) and disappeared into the chaos ahead. A few minutes later, a PNM supporter (from the earlier car) with a machete runs back up the road to a TOP car, swings at a passenger and runs away. TOP car and several other TOP cars and buses (PNM provoker was literally the only PNM supporter in the vicinity) empty out and chase attacker back to his car. I can only slightly see through the traffic as the car is smashed to pieces and the occupants assaulted.

Suddenly two young women in TOP’s yellow shirts start making their way back up the line of cars towards us. One is clearly is distraught and limping and her shirt is on backwards and inside out. They stop at a few cars ahead, but keep moving up the line, finally knocking on my window asking to give the distraught girl a ride back to very near where our apartment is. "Yes, of course." She is incoherent, give her water, try to calm her down, and it finally dawns on me that she was in the PNM car when her savior had the where with all to drag her out, throw a yellow shirt on her and get her away as quickly as possible.

As the traffic finally starts to move again, the PNM car is destroyed in the middle of the road, and as we pull past the ambulances and police who’ve showed up, the girl recognizes a teen boy being treated as another passenger from the car (not the instigator) and it’s decided we’re the fastest ride for them to home/hospital.

Everyone’s safe and sound, and I just needed to get this off my chest somewhere. Still shaking.

Remember to check election dates in third world countries before going. Duh.
