… what Noel Coward started in the form of a play in the 1920s and was expanded in 1929 by Alfred Hitchcock in the production of a silent movie has been expanded, put into the Twenty-first Century in magnificent color, manned with brilliant and talented performers like Jessica Biel and Colin Firth, moved from the stage and taken out of doors to the raceways of the Riviera, to the country hills and mansions of England and on the trail of a doomed fox, which will be pursued by our heroine on a motorcycle instead of a thoroughbred horse and she will indeed even lead the way for the fox. The movie is Easy Virtue and we should all be grateful to the producers, director and staff who kept the essence of the Noel Coward story, but expanded the story into a delightful comedy, which only became serious at the ending and that was handled beautifully by our two geniuses, Jessica Biel and Colin Firth.

I watched this movie several months ago and didn’t realize how much I liked it until I had seen the Alfred Hitchcock silent movie version. The montage here says the things I wanted to say about the new Jessica Biel, Colin Firth presentation … and that’s the way I think of the movie … a Jessica Biel/Colin Firth vehicile for successful entertainment.

If the montage is a radial clock, we’ll begin at eleven o’clock … any World War 2 airmen will be able to relate to this scenario, remember the old warning, "BANDITS ! BANDITS AT 3 O’CLOCK" or if your more familiar with a magnetic compass, that would be bandits coming in from due EAST….but I digress, as is my wont…love those old cliches.

Anyway, the movie begins with Larita having won the Grand Prix in France, but was disqualified for some unstated reason, however, in the process of receiving flowers and a standing ovation (actually the crowd was already standing) she makes eye contact with John Whittiker (played by Ben Barnes). They suffer a whirlwind romance and are married on the spur of the moment with John saying he wants to know nothing about Larita’s background and all he needs to know is he loves her and they look forward to meeting his aristocratic family back in jolly ole’ England.

At twelve o’clock the loving couple are with the family and from the outset the mother, Veronica (played by Kristin Scott Thomas) takes exception to this American low-class widow who has taken advantage of her son and married him for his position and money. On the other hand John’s father takes an instant liking to Larita and they become fast friends, even working together to restore an old motorcycle … remember, Larita is a racing driver and knows machines and motors.

Now at ten o’clock we see a very abstract painting which Larita had shipped from France to her in England. The abstract is of her in the nude and was painted by a Spanish painter while she was in France. You can imagine what the mother had to say about that and at this point Even John sides with his mother and doesn’t think that was quite proper behavior, even for their enlightened generation.

At two o-clock we see two women doing a mean French Can Can in full costume. Larita and John’s younger sister agreed to do the Can Can for a local benefit for War Widows variety show. At an earlier meeting, Larita had pointed out that to do the original dance, they would have to be totally sans undergarments. She forgot to inform the younger sister this was a joke and so at the performance itself, forty percent of the audience was delighted out of their minds as the dance progressed. When the dance was over and the debriefing took place, the younger sister was in tears and screaming she would never be able to get a husband, the mother was damning to eternal hellfire everything American and French, the father was smiling and Larita was pleasantly philosophic about the whole matter. John thought perhaps boys would be lining up at their door to meet his younger sister. This was the "mother subject" until the next fox paw came up, which was coincidentally the annual Fox Hunt … please refer to eight o’clock.

Larita was not really at home on horses and tried to beg off riding in the annual hunt, but the mother was like dripping water torture with her insistence Larita ride for John’s sake. Finally Larita surrendered and said, "…alright then, I will RIDE." … and indeed she did. When the day of the race came, Larita was dressed for riding, but let the others leave with the explanation she would catch up with them and that she did. She rode on the newly restored motorcycle and not only caught up with them, but passed them and ever got ahead of the hounds, then as if that was not sufficient, she passed the fox. The mother was, of course livid, although everyone else thought it was funny. Larita’s smile seemed fuller.

Next, the mother brought Sarah, the girls from the estate next door who was the girl she had chosen for John to marry, thus bonding the two wealthy estates into one family. Larita, Larita, you had no idea what mammoth plans you destroyed. As it turned out that marriage was essential because the mother was going to have to declare bankruptcy if John did not marry Sarah. The problem was Sarah and Larita became fast friends … a bitter pill, indeed, for the mother to try and swallow. You’ll see them at four o’clock.

The last fox paw was actually unintentional on anyone’s fault. The whole families of the two estates went on a long hike, taking their dogs with them. As the miles went by, John and Larita began to have feelings of romance and slipped away to the privacy of an abandoned ruins, as a matter of fact an old church, hopefully unconsecrated. At about the time things would have been closing down for John and Larita, the dogs discovered and squirrel, rabbit, fox other small animal of interest and unfortunately chased the poor creature right smack into John and Larita’s love nest. Larita grabbed the only coat around and covered herself as the families followed the dogs inside. John could find nothing with which to cover himself, so grabbed one of the dogs to hold in front of his modesty.. Apologies were expressed and the two estate clans retreated leaving Larita and John to dress. Did I mention this is at seven o’clock?

The climax of the movie is when Veronica finds out Larita was tried in the USA for murder in the death of her husband and immediately in her own mind, retries her, finds her guilty and sentences her to a slow, torturous death. No one seems to have ears for the actual facts which were Larita’s husband was dieing of a dreadfully painful cancer and had made arrangements for an overdose of medication when the time came. However by that time his strength was such he was unable to push the plunger and it was charged that Larita did so herself at his begging. There was a short trial and Larita was determined innocent by the jury. You will remember she had offered to tell John all about her past, but he refused to listen. Now, however, John was siding with his mother and felt Larita had betrayed him by not telling him of the trial.

Larita gave her wedding ring, a Whittaker family heirloom to Sarah and tells Sarah to marry John and try to help him escape the clutches of his mother. Larita says goodbye to everyone, packs and prepares to drive away forever, all the while, the mother is screaming vitriol at Larita. One of the paradoxes of the family was with all their straight-laced morals, the estate was peopled with classical Greek and Roman nude statues. At six o’clock sharp you will see Larita pushing over Venus in the entryway. Venus must have been in at least a hundred pieces as Larita escaped through the front door. Now, we’ll wind this thing up at five o’clock sharp. No overtime to be made here, ok?

As Larita gets into he sports racing car, John’s father, Jim (Colin Firth) asks if she has room for another escapee. She graciously invites him in and so what more fitting conclusion could we have wanted but Jessica Biel and Colin Firth riding off into the sunset. Kinda makes you miss Roy and Dale, now don’t it?

Here’s a link to a short statement about the Hitchcock silent film …
