December 2000. The Peace Corps had a call back for training and decides to hold it in the Hotel Amursky Zaliv. I never found out why they chose this place or who, if anyone, researched it. As volunteers, we had been in the field for about 4 months and all of us were looking forward to this. It would be a chance for all of us to catch up, get reacquainted, compare notes (and horror stories), get a couple good meals in us, and in the very least, get a hot shower (a rarity in most of the villages). All of us were excited about this, and were looking forward to our time at the Hotel.
This is quite possibly, the scariest place I’ve ever been to, and I don’t scare easy. Maybe it was the rooms with nothing but stained mattresses on the floor. Maybe it was the police chasing beaten and bloodied men down the hall in the middle of the night. Maybe it was the Chinese tourists asking me how much any girl in a 10 foot radius cost. Maybe it was the plethora of pornography available right next to the Russian nesting dolls in the gift shop.
More than anything, it was the stripper pole in the conference room that we were having our training sessions at.
My most vivid memory of the place was seeing a black Mercedes from my balcony window. I went to take a picture of it, because for some reason, all the cars in Vladivostok were white Toyota Corollas imported from Japan. As I leveled my camera at the car, a large man in a black suit got out and leveled a large machine gun at me.
I put the camera away, and locked the door.
This picture is from the hotel brochure, and is the only picture I have from the whole week, as my camera was stolen when my room was broken into in the middle of the night. A friend suggested that I report it to the police, but I thought it might be best just to let it slide. I sent this clipping from the brochure home with a caption reading "These lovely ladies are available in the gift shop as well . . . "
I don’t think my family thought it was as funny as I did.

This track has some of my favorites of the mix on it. I mean, besides having "mama said knock you out" and "body movin’" on it, Girl Talk gives you the unmistakably odd, but truly incredible pairing of "Li’l Mama" and "Metallica". HUH? Yeah, believe it. It’s ill.
Once again, it will probably be a very long day for me, as today the Cash For Clunkers program begins again with an extra 2 Billion dollars of our tax money going back out to complete strangers. At least, i guess, i have the opportunity to make some of it back. If any of you are thinking about utilizing this program and have any questions about it, let me know…i’ll do my best to get back to you asap
