While enroute to a local gym, I typically spend an hour in Verdi Square, outside the IRT subway station at Broadway & 72nd Street in New York City. It’s a nice opportunity for people-watching, and I typically photograph tourists, mothers and nannies out for a walk with their kids, and a variety of mostly-middle-class workers coming and going from/to the subway station.
But a few days ago, I was shooed out of the park when I arrived, by a polite young man who told me they were setting up to shoot a scene for an upcoming movie ("A Winter Tale," with Russell Crowe, Will Smith, Colin Farrell, Jennifer Conley, William Hurt, Eva Marie Saint, and others — described as "a fantasy story set in 19th century and present-day Manhattan … revolving around a thief, a dying girl, and a white horse." More details here ). Well, I’m not a movie star, so I complied with the man’s request, and decided to find some other place to people-watch for a while…
I walked across 72nd Street, where Verdi Square extends another block to the south, and settled down in a corner at the intersection of Broadway, Amsterdam Ave, and 71st Street. Traffic is always snarled up here, because there are uptown and downtown lanes of Broadway, with Amsterdam intersecting at an angle, and 71st Street going across in an east-west direction — so a jumbled mess of taxis, trucks, busses, and cars are constantly honking at each other as they weave in and out …
And there is also a huge jumble of people weaving in and out of the traffic, wandering back and forth across the street, heading toward the subway, or simply walking in throngs up and down Broadway. Part of the crowd seems to be associated with a McDonald’s located right on the southwest corner of this intersection (to see some generally negative Yelp reviews of the food and service at this McDonald’s click here).
But what interested me most was the people — and how different they looked and acted from the people I’ve been watching just a block further north, in the "main" part of Verdi Square. The people here appeared to mostly teenagers (there were also a few young kids, a couple of mothers with baby carriages, and a few elderly folks, too – but I have not included them in this Flickr set), and they looked like high-school students … which is a little confusing, because I’m not aware of any high schools within several blocks of this location.
Aside from that, they looked … well, just "different." Take a look at them, and then compare them with the people you’ll see in this Flickr collection of 8 different sets of photos taken in the "main" part of Verdi Square over the past four years. I’m not sure what to make of it, but it was certainly an interesting contrast…
