We all have our own personal style, reflected in the clothes we wear, the furniture in our homes and the cars we drive. Such choices seem to be abundant and individual, but never before have so many of the products around us been basically so identical. And it's just as well they are, because otherwise we could never afford to buy a pair of jeans or a piece of furniture. Right from the start of the industrial era, designers have fought to achieve the benefits of product standardisation. In this exhibition, the Gemeentemuseum joins with the Design Den Haag Foundation to reveal the extent to which social and statutory norms have led, in the space of little over a century, to the design of products which are affordable and accessible to us all.

When we go to buy clothes, we expect to find a range of different stock sizes: small, medium and large. But how does such a sizing system come about? The average sizes we know today are the result of large-scale population surveys conducted over the last century. In the 1920s, August Lingner (inventor of Odol mouthwash) introduced life-size glass models of the human body, showing the muscles, tendons and nerves and approaching man as a machine. This marked the start of a systematic quest to determine the dimensions of the average human being: the size of feet, hands and heads. It was this quest that led to today's standards for the size of trousers, the height of kitchen cabinets and the depth of sofas.

Stock clothing sizes have always been based on Western data for populations around the world. Now, these are proving inadequate for certain markets, for example in Asia. This is the reason for the vast survey known as Size China. As part of this project, the heads and faces of innumerable Chinese men and women have been measured in order to establish various average dimensions. Based on the resulting data, aluminium heads have been created which manufacturers around the world can order for use in producing sunglasses, hats and motorbike helmets to fit consumers in the growing Chinese market.

As well as these prototypes for the average human being, the exhibition will include countless examples of everyday objects: we see them around us all the time but probably never stop to consider that their design is based on all sorts of official standards and regulations. Among the examples in the exhibition will be the Aquila fitted kitchen designed by Kho Liang Le for Bruynzeel in 1965. The modular, off-the-ground kitchen may look like nothing more than a clever example of aesthetic design, but is actually planned on the principle that everything must be exactly within reach and at the correct working height.

A final important influence on standards is the consumer. It is the culture consumers live in that decides the success or failure of any given design. Examples on display will include garments like T-shirts and jeans which have continued to be produced virtually unchanged down the years. A pair of jeans from Levi's 1999 Vintage collection harks back to a model from the 1980s, in turn based on the original working man's trousers of the 19th century. At the same time, this evergreen favourite is constantly updated by adding pockets and other features to conform to the tastes and fashions of the day.

Norm = Form reveals the role of designers in the standardisation of products. Initially, they were against it, because it seemed to limit their creative freedom. But gradually they came to see its advantages: low prices, smart houses and products, and the possibility of serving large sections of the population. The exhibition will include designs by Charles Eames, Herbert Lindinger, Ettore Sottass, Pierre Paulin and Kisho Kurokawa, and objects on loan from world-class institutions like the Centre Pompidou. It will be accompanied by a lavishly illustrated catalogue authored by Timo de Rijk.

A wonderful exhibition, highly recommended, however, inside the building, no photography is allowed, unlike in the Design Musum in London, there we could photograph inside, as long we did / do not use any flash photography.

The story is getting worldwide attention, with the Daily Mail reporting that Tomica was returning home from a shift at the trendy nightclub.

If that’s the case, Nikki Beach was employing an underage bartender.

Tomica was driving a 2007 Dodge Charger along Collins Avenue in Miami Beach and struck 49-year-old Riccioletti yards away from the Shelbourne Hotel.

She was apparently driving home after her shift at Nikki Beach, a bar and nightclub. The high-end bar did not immediately respond to MailOnline's request for comment.

Mr Riccioletti, a father of two, was the executive chef at the exclusive Shore Club within the hotel and was just leaving work at the time that he was struck.

According to police reports, he was thrown several feet into the hotel's driveway.

When paramedics arrived at the scene, they pronounced the chef DOA, according to WSVN.

The arrest affidavit states that Tomica fled the scene immediately after striking the chef. A Good Samaritan who witnessed the incident decided to trail the 20-year-old, placing a call to 911 at the same time.

'I'm actually just following a car that just hit a man on Collins Avenue,' the man said on 911 tapes, which were released today. 'As far as I know, at this time, she must have killed him.'

The witness described Tomica as being 'really drunk' at the time of the incident.

According to NBC Miami, the witness followed Tomica back to her apartment, further down Collins Avenue.

The affidavit states that upon reaching her apartment, the young woman got out of her vehicle, handed the keys to a valet, and went into her apartment.

When officers arrived at her apartment, they said in their report that Tomica had slurred speech and smelled of alcohol. She was pictured by NBC Miami being led from her apartment into custody, mascara streaks marring her face.

Tomica is pictured in tears in her booking photo, clutching her hands into fists below her face. She was charged with driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident, but was later freed on ,000 bond.

It is unclear if she has an attorney.

According to records, Tomica is from Port St. Lucie and has been a student at Florida International University.

The University told MailOnline she is currently not enrolled at the institution.

Both Tomica's Twitter and Facebook pages have been deleted.

Lucy Martin, the general manager of the Shore Club, issued a statement saying that Mr Riccioletti was 'a valued member of our team and will be greatly missed.'

The culinary community is still reeling after hearing about the death of Terrazza executive chef Stefano Riccioletti.

Riccioletti, a family man with two small children, was struck and killed in an apparent DUI hit-and-run around 6 a.m. Monday by 20-year-old Karlie Tomica.

Tomica fled the scene in her car, only to be chased 40 blocks by Good Samaritan Jairo Fuentes. Fuentes witnessed the incident and followed Tomica while on the phone with police.

In the released 911 call, Fuentes tells the emergency operator: "I’m here right now… the lady is really drunk and she just came out of the car."

WPLG Local 10 reports that Tomica’s arrest report also states she appeared drunk.

In a further twist, WPLG’s report states Tomica told police she bartends at Nikki Beach.

The story is getting worldwide attention, with the Daily Mail reporting that Tomica was returning home from a shift at the trendy nightclub.

If that’s the case, Nikki Beach was employing an underage bartender.

According to Florida law, a person must be 21 to consume alcohol, but can serve alcohol at 18 (and sell alcohol at age 16 — presumably meant for retail workers selling sealed containers). Short Order consulted with an attorney who requested to remain anonymous regarding Florida laws pertaining to the legal age to pour, serve, consume, and possess alcohol, as well as the possible ramifications that may occur. We were advised that although you can serve at the age of 18, you cannot pour spirits under the age of 21.

In addition, "A licensee, or his or her or its agents, officers, servants, or employees, may not provide alcoholic beverages to a person younger than 21 years of age who is employed by the licensee except as authorized pursuant to s. 562.111 or s. 562.13, and may not permit a person younger than 21 years of age who is employed by the licensee to consume alcoholic beverages on the licensed premises or elsewhere while in the scope of employment. A licensee, or his or her or its agents, officers, servants, or employees, who violates this paragraph commits a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083. This paragraph may be cited as "the Christopher Fugate Act."

If a Nikki Beach employee served her alcohol — the nightclub could face penalties.

A first offense carries a ,000 fine and seven-day license suspension. A second offense within three years brings a ,000 fine and 30-day license suspension, while a third offense within three years means license revocation.

In addition, if Tomica was, in fact, returning home directly from Nikki Beach, the nightclub could be named in a civil lawsuit. Criminal allegations might be harder, because they would require proof beyond a reasonable doubt that Nikki Beach management and employees either served alcohol to Tomica or witnessed her drinking alcohol on the premises before leaving in her car.

Short Order left several messages with Nikki Beach for comment about Tomica. We will keep you posted with updates to the story.
